20160929 – Whiskey and Jan

Another amazing day in Ouray.  It was actually warm considering the past few days.  I would almost dare to say it was toasty, but… that’s all relative considering it’s snowed in town already this Fall.

After a short workout in the gym and then a quick chat with Seth, my trainer on Facetime, I had to head to Montrose for some chores. The downside to living in the middle of nowhere is that you have to drive an hour to the grocery store.  There actually is a mini market in the town of Ouray, but you have to be pretty desperate to make a purchase from the ‘Food Museum’.

Once I got back to Ouray, it was time to set out on the bike.  I wasn’t sure if it was that great of an idea, considering my thighs were still screaming from yesterday’s hike.  I decided I needed to hop on the bike so I headed up Camp Bird road, which is nothing but uphill.   I’m not going to lie… it hurt in the beginning, but once I got warmed up, I boogied my ass up that road.

After the ride and a shower, my friends Paul and Jan (who are the greatest people and friends – and a big part of me moving to Ouray – but who now live on the Front Range) came into town.  They met me at my place and shortly after arriving, Paul had to leave for Silverton for a town meeting.   That left Jan and I to find some fun things to do for the evening.

First, we headed up to Crystal Lake near Ironton for a hike through the amazing colors of the aspen trees.  There was a light wind, which rustled through the colorful aspen trees.  The sound of aspen leaves in the wind is so unique and indescribable.  It’s truly a Colorado sound.

After the hike, we headed back to town where we had a little happy hour and then headed to dinner.  Jan and I had a great meal and we kinda felt bad for having such a great time, while we knew Paul was working…

As we were walking back from dinner, we passed the Distillery that has been under construction for months and were struggling to get open.   We saw lights on and the ‘Open’ sign was illuminated.  Could they be open…??   We went to investigate and discovered they were indeed, finally open for business.

We made our way to the second floor where the bar is….  Just a fun fact… the barback that the Distillery is using as their main functional unit, where they store glasses and display their bottles, was originally in the Story Block building in Ouray, that Jan and Paul now own.  It’s pretty incredible to see such a beautiful piece of history in a new and gorgeous building in town.

Once we settled in…  Needless to say…  I had to test the Whiskey and WOW…..  it was amazing.   Poor Jan, who doesn’t drink hard liquor had to endure my savoring of the whiskey and we were the last patrons in the building.

What a fun night with Jan…. just felt bad that poor Paul had to work while we had fun…… but… sometimes you just have to deal with a “PILE OF CRAP” (that’s for you Paul…!!)

I did buy a bottle of the whiskey and shared some with him, once he got back to town.

Looking forward to seeing my friends, Paul and Jan, again soon. They’re special people and more importantly, special friends.

20160911 – A hike in WP

The Valley

Click for above for amazing view of Grand Valley….!!

After the Wings and Whiskey Festival, the next day was just as beautiful in Winter Park.  This time of the year in Colorado is just amazing.  After an early morning shower, I’m ready for the day.  I’m on my way to meet Suz for some breakfast at Rise.  I can  taste the bacon already…

As I step outside to walk up to the restaurant, I can’t believe how chilly it is this morning… FALL IS HERE….!!!!    There was frost on the suburban and I could see my breath.  It’s too early for the cold.  I need my summer to hang on a couple more weeks…

After breakfast, the Rousheys and I headed up to the Beyer’s Peak trailhead.  It’s about 7 miles south of Winter Park.   It’s a 13’ner and one of the most beautiful peaks in Grand County.

Once we get to the trailhead, Ms Suz signs us in to the trailhead registry.  She’s so official, which is a good thing.  Thankfully, someone is smart enough to look out for the safety of the group.

The hike was fun, but even more fun with Joy…!!!!   She sets a pace that’s hard to keep up with..!!

Yeti Trap

Of course, as we work our way up the trail…..  existence of the Yeti becomes clear… look at this Yeti trap.  He places a log across the trail to slow us down.   That tree doesn’t land in the middle of the trail by accident.  The snowman is real…!!!

The Yeti is Ruthless

As you can see, the Yeti trap has spikes on the log to slow down his prey…!!   The Yeti is……

After successfully escaping the traps of the Yeti, I settle on the patio of the Roushey’s patio and enjoy some whiskey imbibing.    Life is good.

20160910 – Whiskey and Wings

It’s time for the 5th Annual Whiskey and Wings Festival…!!

Who ever thought of this combination for a Festival should get the Nobel Peace Prize.   Some of the past festivals have been lacking, but this year was Fantastic.

The festival is held at the base of Winter Park Resort.  It’s a combination of vendors who are competing for the best tasting wings and vendors of whiskey tastings.  This year had a great combination of both.

My vote this year for the best wing, believe it or not was from Jim Beam.  They made these tasty wings with their Jim Beam Red Stag.  They were fantastic…!!  I tried searching for the recipe and this was the closest I could find:

The day of the festival couldn’t had been more perfect.  After an early morning lift and sauna at the Fraser Rec Center, I met Suz and Bill for a late breakfast.  While waiting for them, I couldn’t resist a donut and mocha from Rise and Shine.  Life is good at this moment…!!

The best donut on the face of the planet.

After breakfast, we headed to the base of Winter Park where the weather for the festival couldn’t have been any better.  Here’s a pic of the Rousheys while we imbibed some whiskey and took in some yummy wings.

20160827 – A Hike with Some Friends – Evidence of the Yeti

We decided to take a hike this morning.  The trail we picked was near Mt. Princeton.

I know the Yeti is close..!!

I photo bombed my own shot…!!   The trail has been a struggle in the beginning since it’s been mostly uphill, but everyone is a trooper and forging forward.

Just in case you didn’t think the Yeti exists… Here is another Yeti Hut sighting.  They’re quite skilled in hut building.  I’d stay in that overnight.

Another Yeti Hut.

The ULTIMATE Yeti evidence:  Yeti Poo……    That’s quite the scat pile…!!

Further up the trail, guess what… another Yeti campground.  Not only is the hut built flawlessly, it’s even built with a Yeti bleacher.  I guess they must watch movies from those seats.

Believe in the in the Yeti….!!!

20160812 – Winter Park day of Fun

Still hanging in Winter Park, thanks to my friends who let me stay at their condo.  It’s just such an amazing town.

After a morning at the gym, hit the patio at the Rocky Mountain Roastery in Frasier.  What a beautiful day.

Java.

At the Roastery, they had some coffee that can help with my Costa Rica Training…!!

After the coffee break, threw the bike on the back of the Suburban and headed to the trail across from Winter Park.  As you can see, Winter Park is so beautiful.  I think it’s more amazing in the Summer…!!

Unfortunately, the legs aren’t firing on all cylinders today.  Still having a great time, even though the legs are dead.  I guess it’s time to take a bit of a rest.

Headed to the base of Winter Park for the outdoor movie.  What an incredible sunset sky.  But wow…. it’s COLD…!!!

Beautiful WP Evening.

We tried to make the movie, but it was too cold.  Headed back to the condo to enjoy some vino and movie at home.  Such a great time to spend with your friends.  I treasure every chance to spend with the Roushey’s.  I’m lucky to be their friend.
